The University of Minnesota is pleased to announce a new tool—developed at the request of the Council of Graduate Students (COGS) and with the permission of our Big Ten public university colleagues—which presents graduate assistant stipend information on a Tableau dashboard.

The dashboard presents University of Minnesota average stipends compared with the average across the remaining Big Ten public institutions. The data can be filtered by discipline (in particular, by CIP code, either 2-digit or 4-digit). By hovering over the graphic, or viewing the data in a table, users can see additional statistics (minimum, maximum, standard deviation). Note that the data presented are 9-month, 20-hour per week stipends only, and do not include fees, health care subsidies, or any other forms of compensation.

Employees and currently-enrolled graduate and professional students can now access the Graduate Assistant Stipend Benchmark Dashboard here. Please note that users must login with their University of Minnesota ID, and that off-campus users must be connected via VPN. Our agreement with our Big Ten public university colleagues allows us to make this data available to the university community at the University of Minnesota.

We hope that you find this tool useful for benchmarking purposes, and to ensure that our stipends are competitive with our peers.

We want to thank COGS leadership for their partnership as we worked to develop this tool, and express our sincere appreciation to our provost and vice provost counterparts at the other Big Ten public universities for their willingness to share their data and to be included in the dashboard.

Data Sources

The source of this dashboard is the AAUDE Graduate Assistant Stipends (by CIP code) exchange item, which is a confidential item. Approval has been granted to the University of Minnesota by each of the Big 10 Public institutions represented in the "Big 10 Publics" comparison group to share their data at this summary level by CIP code with the University of Minnesota community

Note: Cells with fewer than 5 individuals are suppressed from the dashboard.

Glossary

Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code

The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is a taxonomy of academic programs developed by the U.S. Department of Education. Colleges and universities across the country assign CIP codes to their academic programs. CIP codes are also often assigned to courses, certificates, and degrees, which is the primary means for comparing program-level data across institutions. CIP codes are hierarchical and so the 2-digit CIP code represents the highest-level aggregation for a set of programs.

Academic Year

The annual period of instruction that includes fall, spring, and summer terms. It is set based on the calendar year in which fall term falls, i.e., the academic year 2015 goes from Fall 2015 through Summer 2016.

Graduate Assistant Type

Indication of whether a graduate assistant is a Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant.

Research Assistant (AAUDE)

Graduate Research Assistants are graduate assistants whose responsibilities consist primarily of research related duties supported from sponsored research or other separately funded research funds, or are institutionally designated as graduate research assistants regardless of source of funds. The research performed by the research assistant may or may not be creditable toward his or her degree requirements.

Teaching Assistant (AAUDE)

Graduate Teaching Assistants are graduate assistants whose responsibilities are primarily related to instruction. These include those directly involved in the teaching of a class, as well as those who provide direct support for instruction such as grading and class preparation.
