discovery across disciplines

Thursday, October 15, 2015 | 12 – 2 p.m.

Great Hall, Coffman Memorial Union

Many intellectual, social, and practical problems transcend the scope of a single field of study. Creative solutions to these types of complex problems often require the integration of multiple perspectives, methods and concepts. The centers and institutes at the University of Minnesota provide opportunities for researchers to collaborate across disciplines, and to seek the answers to some of the world’s toughest challenges.

The Discovery Across Disciplines showcase will highlight the exciting and engaging work of more than 60 of the University’s interdisciplinary research centers and institutes.

Take time to connect with others across campus who share your research and scholarly interests at this poster-session-style event. Browse the exhibits, interact with researchers, network with colleagues, and learn about opportunities for involvement in interdisciplinary inquiry. Graduate students, postdocs, and faculty new to the University within the past few years are especially encouraged to attend.

Members of the Twin Cities business, government and nonprofit community are also invited to explore the ways in which their organizations might benefit from University resources and expertise. Partnerships between the University’s centers and institutes and the local community have resulted in countless discoveries and breakthrough research (see sidebar).

This event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required. Convenient parking is available in the East River Parkway Garage or the Weisman Art Museum Garage. For more information, contact, 612-625-6532.

A Better Solution for MN Roads

Center for Transportation Studies

U of M Researchers through the Center for Transportation Studies recently partnered with MnDOT and the Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota to develop a new concrete pavement design tool. The new designs – developed specifically for Minnesota road conditions – last longer and cost less. MnDOT made this the state's official concrete design program in 2014.

Measuring Well-Being

Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare

The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare
was recruited by Anu Family Services to develop the Well-being Indicator Tool for Youth. Designed for youth aged 15-21 years who currently are in or in the past have had contact with the child welfare system, this tool helps them explore, understand and improve their well-being across domains such as safety and security, mental health, and sense of purpose.

Mining Opinions with Math

Institute for Mathematics and its Applications

The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, in partnership with Ford Motor Company, is developing machine learning techniques to perform sentiment analysis, or opinion mining, of customer reviews, which helps companies understand the attitude and impressions the public has about their products.
