2016 Graduate Research Internship Recipients

24 grad students receive awards totaling almost $100K to support summer research internships

Summer Research Internships

In a continuing effort to broaden research experiences and career options for graduate students, the Graduate School recently awarded 24 students with stipends of up to $4,000 each for research internships during summer 2016. This is the second year of the summer research internship program; you can hear from a few of last year’s internship participants about their experiences via this brief video.

The purpose of the program is to expand the network of partners in industry, non-profit, and government sectors offering internships, and to encourage students who might not otherwise consider an internship to explore this possibility.

Students in research-based doctoral (Ph.D. and D.M.A.) and master’s programs (Plan A) are eligible for the award. Priority was given to applications from students in non-STEM fields that don’t typically include internships – either paid or unpaid – as part of their graduate student training. It was also critical that applicants could demonstrate how the proposed research project would enhance the student’s dissertation research; how it would benefit both the student and the host organization; and how the skills and experience gained would advance career readiness and options.

The wide array of “host” organizations brought forth by the students is impressive: from Urban Farm & Garden Alliance in St. Paul to the African Federation in Emergency Medicine in Cape Town, South Africa; from a leading technology corporation in Vietnam to a drama program in India.

Congratulations to this year’s awardees!
