DeWitt Fellowship: Summary

Required Documentation

Program Nomination Deadline: Noon, November 8, 2017

Each nomination is uploaded by program staff, as a single PDF  to the electronic nomination form, and must include:

    1.  DGS Nominating Letter
    2.  Education Statement
    3.  Curriculum Vitae
    4.  Statement of Research
    5.  University of Minnesota Graduate Transcripts
    6.  Two Letters of Recommendation
    7.  If applicable, IRB/IACUC Approval

1.  DGS Nominating Letter
  • Relevant graduate programs that offer the Ph.D. may nominate one student.  The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) should attach a nominating letter describing the program’s selection procedures, the size of the eligible candidate pool and the decision process.

3.  Curriculum Vitae
  • Maximum two-pages, single-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins.
  • Focus on activities relevant to your research, publications, presentations, academic accomplishments & awards.
4.  Statement of Research
  • Maximum two-pages, single-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins.  Key references, diagrams or pictures may be included (but they are not required) on a single additional appendix page (no formatting requirements).
  • At the top of the proposal: Include a working title for your research project and a 100-word abstract describing your research project to the non-specialist.
  • Your research plan should describe the work already completed, the current status of your research, and what you will be working on during the fellowship year.
  • Describe your research in terms that are accessible to the non-specialist.
  • If your research is part of a larger group project, be specific about your role and independent contribution.
5.  University of Minnesota Transcripts
  • Unoffical UMN Graduate Transcript with explanation of any incomplete grades.

6.  Two Letters of Recommendation from Faculty

Two faculty recommendation letters.   Nominee must provide the Recommendation Instructions link to recommendation letter writers.
Letters should be sent to program for inclusion in the electronic nomination.  Letters should Include detail on:  

  • The strength of the academic record and the overall professional promise.
  • The cohesiveness and significance of the study or research plan.
  • The timeliness of progress toward the degree.

7.  If applicable, IRB/IACUC documentation for human/animal subjects
