APD Update: June 17, 2015

Events for New Graduate & Professional Students

Welcome to the University of Minnesota! As a new graduate or professional student, you will have access to many opportunities and resources to help you with your academic and professional development. The events listed in this edition of the Academic and Professional Development Update are specifically focused on your needs as a new student. We will be adding to these resources over the next several months, so please continue to check the APD Update for additional information. You may also want to subscribe to the APD Update on an on-going basis to make sure you receive information on academic and professional development opportunities for graduate and professional students throughout the year.


New TA Orientation

August 31, 2015 (Monday) | 1 - 4 p.m. | Smith Hall, Room 100

All new TAs are invited to attend this session, which will focus on practical suggestions for a successful first day, first week, and first semester at the U. Learn about University policies and resources that relate to you as a teaching assistant as well as teaching strategies that you can use right away. There is also an online Moodle component (enrollment key: NTAO2015), which must be completed prior to attending this session.


Doctoral Student Orientation

September 1, 2015 (Tuesday) | 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Northrop Auditorium

Event Organizer: The Graduate School

This event is designed to introduce new doctoral students to the University, the graduate community and the broad range of resources and services available to support their success. It is open to all incoming doctoral students and is intended to complement orientations provided by programs and colleges; it is not required.

Following a welcome from the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education, students will have the opportunity to participate in small-group sessions on topics like grantwriting and funding strategies, professional development, library resources, and health and well-being. The event will include a reprise of the most popular session from previous orientations: "Things I Wish I Had Known as a First-Year Doctoral Student."

Please also plan to attend the Resource Fair just after the orientation (details below).


Master's & Professional Student Orientation

September 1, 2015 (Tuesday) | 12:30 - 4 p.m. | Northrop Auditorium

This event is designed to introduce new master's & professional students to the University, the graduate community and the broad range of resources and services available to support their success. It is open to all incoming master's & professional students and is intended to complement orientations provided by programs and colleges; it is not required.

Following a welcome from the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education, students will have the opportunity to participate in small-group sessions on topics like networking and relationship-building for success, CV/resume development, and wellness and self-care in graduate school. The event will include a reprise of the most popular session from previous orientations: "Things I Wish I Had Known as a First-Year Master's/Professional Student."

Resource Fair for Graduate and Professional Students

September 1, 2015 (Tuesday) | 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. |  Northrop Auditorium, Atrium

The Resource Fair will bridge the two orientation events for doctoral and master's/professional students. Resource tables will provide opportunities for new students to network and talk to representatives from a variety of areas such as Boynton Health Service, Student Conflict Resolution, and the University Rec Center.


Teaching With Writing TA Workshops

A series of workshops on teaching with writing, with an emphasis on commenting and grading student writing (for GI's and TA's who teach with writing).


Teaching Enrichment Series

September 2 & 3, 2015 (Wed. & Thurs.) | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Nicholson Hall

Explore ideas for designing, delivering, and assessing your course! Sessions this year include "Discussions that Engage All Students," "Active Learning 101," and "Small Changes with Big Impact."  The 2015 Teaching Enrichment Series  will be held on Wednesday, September 2, and Thursday, August 3 in Nicholson Hall. Concurrent workshops will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.


Teaching With Writing Team Consultations

We will have hour long consultations with faculty and their TA's and Graders to discuss assignment design, writing instruction, marking, and grading. These appointments can be scheduled through TWW.


Especially for International Students

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), in partnership with the Council for International Graduate Students, will host the following events as part of this year's Global Gopher Week for international graduate and professional students.
