myU Portal Training Now Available Online

A new myU online training module is now available for graduate programs interested in providing content within the myU admitted student portal.

The myU admitted student portal is an online recruitment and transition resource for all admitted U of M Graduate School students. The portal contains a section, or ‘cell’, specifically devoted to your program. You and other faculty and staff from your program can directly control the content of your program cell and use it to provide information to both prospective and confirmed students.

For access to the training module, click here.

For more admitted graduate student portal information, click here.

Since this is our first year with this new resource, we welcome any access inquiries, comments or feedback. Please contact Dean Tsantir at tsan0006@umn.edu

The Graduate School Admissions office invites you to attend our new admissions process and updates session.

The first half of this hour long session will be an overview of credential evaluation and admissions office processes. The second half will be a summary of recent changes to the Apply Yourself (AY) system and online application as well as a preview of upcoming admissions related changes. A more detailed session outline is included below.

New Graduate School online application launched

as part of broader admissions reform initiative

In September 2008, the Graduate School launched a revised version of its online application for admissions. Enhancements were made to qualitative questions only and did not affect any standard required application questions. Applicants who applied before this application went live used the pre-existing application format and will not be required by the Graduate School to update their applications. Please note that it may be necessary to update your department or program application forms and instructions as some labels on the application were changed, and most of the revised questions and statements are now required.

The revised Graduate School application is the outcome of the first phase of a University-wide graduate and professional school admissions reform initiative.  The overarching goal of this initiative is to promote excellence by sharpening the tools that admissions committees have at their disposal to understand both the experiences and qualifications of diverse applicants.

Re-examining Admissions

Practices webpage

By providing more holistic and contextual information for understanding the diversity of our applicants, we hope the Graduate School application will carry the weight of enriching the understanding of our applicants’ academic qualifications and life experience (e.g., the difference between privilege and motivation). In doing so, it is hoped that programs and departments will now be freed to focus more on reassessing their own application forms and instructions to develop more reliable tools for gauging excellence as it is defined within particular fields. This may mean identifying entry-level competencies predictive of success, patterns of academic performance in specific courses required for advanced coursework, and/or strategies for assessing creativity or problem-solving abilities. Together, the two approaches will provide an application that allows for excellence in context.

The second phase of the admissions reform initiative will focus on the reassessment of the forms and instructions programs/departments use to collect information from applicants. As such, we invite you and your colleagues to take part in the second year of the Re-examining Graduate and Professional School Admissions Practices reform initiative cosponsored by the Graduate School and the Office for Equity and Diversity.

For details of this initiative, please see: http://www.grad.umn.edu/AdmPractices/  or contact Patricia Jones-Whyte, director of the Graduate School Diversity Office at whyte001@umn.edu, or Dean Tsantir, director of the Graduate School Admissions Office. For more information about the Graduate School application revisions, please contact Dean Tsantir at tsan0006@umn.edu or 612-625-1303.

Launch of expanded Duluth & Rochester campus ApplyYourself  system

In September 2008, the Graduate School online application system was expanded to include the Duluth and Rochester campus graduate programs. The new application now allows applicants to choose programs from the Twin Cities, Duluth, or Rochester campuses.

To add the new multi-campus functionality, the AY technical team will have to take down the online application for a period of time on September 23. The initial estimate is that the system will be down for up to one business day, but we will be given a more specific timeframe the morning of the launch.

To better reflect this new multi-campus application system, it was necessary to change the Twin Cities campus ApplyYourself client identity to “UMN-GRAD.” This will affects the login process for all of our Twin Cities program staff and applicants in two ways:

1. For program users:

The past client ID login of UMTC-GRAD can no longer be used to access the system. All U of M ApplyYourself users must enter this new UMN-GRAD client ID to access the system. The other login information (user ID and password) will remain the same.

Please note that there has been change to any of the login information for the Change of Status/Readmission system, so its client ID will remain as “UMTC-COS.”

2. For applicants:

The URL of https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=UMTC-GRAD has changed to https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=UMN-GRAD . Current applicants who have either submitted or were in the process of submitting applications were notified of this URL change before the launch. In addition, we have updated all of our current materials (including online letters, e-mail, Web site information, etc.) to reflect this URL change. Please note that this change did not affect the information already submitted by either in-progress or submitted applications.

If you have the current UMTC login or URL on your program Web site, application, or other material, please update accordingly. It is recommended that you link to http://www.grad.umn.edu/prospective_students/apply_online.html as this page contains important transcript/credential information as well.

While ApplyYourself’s technical staff have informed us that no changes occurred to individual program settings or accounts, if you do encounter issues, we will work with you to solve them.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with this significant change. We believe that the benefits of our newly revised and expanded online application were well worth these efforts.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact either Dean Tsantir at tsan0006@umn.edu 612-625-1303 or Jim Rowan at j-rowa@umn.edu 612-626-7454.

NEW WEBCENTER ENHANCEMENTS

Revised "In-Process Status" labels

In the Status Information box on the Applicant Summary Screen, four of the In-Process Status labels will be changed to more clearly describe the status of submitted applications. If you have created in-process status queries for your program, you will need to update to the new in-process choices for your queries. The new text is highlighted in the graphic to the right and each change is explained below:

1.  "Sent to Program" changed to:

“(P) Application Complete - sent to   program”

2.  "Sent to Graduate Admission Office/Lek" changed to:

"(L) Application Complete - sent to program”

3.  "Sent to Graduate School Review Committee" changed to:

      "Graduate School Final Review"

4.  "Appl Ret From Dept - No Appr Form Sub" changed to:

      "Awaiting Program Decision"

* note- The (P) above represents paper, meaning that the Graduate Admissions office has sent a paper file to the program for review. The (L) means 'lektriever', or 'lek' ( lektrievers are the machines in the Grad Admissions office that store student files). The "(L) Application Complete - sent to program" label means that the Grad Admissions office has the paper file in the office 'lek', but that a scanned copy has been sent to the program for review.
