Any student with a U.S. bachelor's
degree or a comparable foreign degree from a recognized college or university
may apply to the Graduate School for admission.
Application Materials
Step 1. If you have not already done so, you should immediately contact your major program of interest or visit its web site for admission requirements - including program application materials, financial aid, start dates, deadlines, and other important information. Programs that require specific materials may not consider the Graduate School application for admission until they receive these materials.
Step 2. The Graduate School application for admission must be
submitted online and all required supporting materials should be sent
to the address listed below. Please note that we will automatically e-mail
you a notice indicating if anything is missing, as soon as we complete
the initial review of your application materials. We will also e-mail
you a notice if your application is complete.
GPA
The Graduate School prefers an undergraduate grade point average
(GPA) of 3.00 (on a 4.0 scale) for admission. Individual programs may
prefer a higher GPA. Applicants should consult the program to which they
are applying for more specific information about admission.
Test Scores
English Profiency -
A TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS test is required of most international applicants whose native language is not English. For more information, see English language requirements

Transcripts / Credentials
You must report on your application and submit transcripts from ALL institutions of higher learning - including partial or incomplete transcripts. You may be considered for admission with unofficial transcripts or credentials. However, if you are admitted, you will be required to submit official transcripts prior to registering and enrolling at the University of Minnesota. All applicants who have attended universities that issue official transcripts on request must have these materials sent to the Graduate School Admissions Office directly from the institution. An official, notarized (signature and seal) English translation should be attached if the transcript is not in English. You may be considered for admission with transcripts submitted the following ways:
- Mailed photocopies
- Legible faxed copies
- Mailed unofficial copies as long as they were issued with your name and the name of the institution on them.
- Official copies sent directly from your institutions to the University of Minnesota
The Graduate School reserves the right to require the submission of official transcripts or credentials any time during the admission review process.

The Graduate School reserves the right to require the submission of official transcripts or credentials any time during the admission review process. To be considered official, the documents must be sent directly from your institution (s) to our office.
Please Note: Students who have been previously enrolled at the University of Minnesota do not need to submit U of M transcripts to the Admissions Office. We will obtain these for you. Please check with your individual program of interest to see if they require you to submit University of Minnesota transcripts.
Current U of M Undergraduates
University of Minnesota
undergraduates who have no more than 7 semester credits or two courses
to complete for the bachelor's degree (including both distribution and
total credit requirements), if they are admitted, may register in the
Graduate School to begin a graduate program while simultaneously completing
their baccalaureate work.
