Spring 2013 GPEA

GPEA Spring Assembly

Tracking graduate student career outcomes has been the focus of much recent discussion in U.S. graduate education circles, particularly as job opportunities have changed with the changing economy.

  • Where do our students land jobs when they graduate?
  • How do their careers progress subsequent to their first job?
  • How do we collect this information?  Why do we collect it? How do we use it?
  • Do our curricula adequately prepare our master’s and doctoral students for the careers they seek?  How do we know?
  • In what ways do, or might, University offices that provide career services support student career development and track student employment (or success)?
  • What role does academic and professional development programming play in preparing students for careers?
  • What do students have to say about their career aspirations?  Do their career goals change over the course of their study here? If so, why, and what does that mean?

On April 3, 2013, members of the University of Minnesota's graduate and professional education community interested in the “why’s” and “how to’s” of tracking graduate student career outcomes joined campus leaders and those at the forefront of efforts to capture graduate student placement data in exploring answers and approaches to these and related questions. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in facilitated discussions on specific topics of interest to them.
