Diverse Communities
Our Twin Cities, with a metropolitan population of 3.3 million, offer a unique combination of cosmopolitan life and the peaceful setting of lakes and parks. Our communities of color are growing and Minnesota has the forth highest rate of minority populations increase in the country. Four distinct communities of color contribute to the thriving cultural life in the Twin Cities. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus has approximately 52,500 students (14,000 of which are graduate students). More than 7,400 students of color (U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents), or approximately fifteen percent of the student body population, are pursing degrees on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Of these students, more than 1,600 are enrolled in graduate school programs.
Immigrant communities thrive in the Twin Cities. Somalis, Southeast Asians, and Eastern Europeans have in recent years joined the more established Hispanic and African American communities. Also included in the ethnic and cultural blend are Native America who are represented in the Twin Cities and in greater Minnesota. People from all over the United States and the world call the Twin Cities home. The state is home to a thriving and engaged business community that boasts numerous Fortune 500 companies and multinational organizations. Historically, Minnesota is noteworthy for its progressive approaches to health and human services, medical innovation, computer technology, and public policy leadership. For all these reasons and more, Minnesota is consistently ranked one of the best places to live in the United States
