Initiative for Music and Sound Studies
Description
The Initiative on Music and Sound Studies seeks to provide a space for the study of underrepresented research fields within music studies (historical musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, music education), particularly those of interest to graduate students investigating acoustic phenomena at
the University of Minnesota. Emerging or growing fields of interest include sound studies, popular music studies, neurocognition of music, and critical/cultural theory and philosophy of music.
Graduate students participating in the group would be involved, with faculty oversight, in two primary activities: 1) overseeing a small visiting lecture series (ideally, 3 speakers over the school year), in
which students would be involved in all its various aspects, from conception to execution and participation, and 2) participating in a reading group, consisting of the study of contemporary publications of interest within emerging music studies fields, selected by the group collectively.
