Five recent degree recipients have been selected as winners of the 2010 Best Dissertation Award and the 2009 Distinguished Master's Thesis Award. They were honored June 7 at an event attended by their faculty advisers.
Best Dissertation Award
Winners of the Best Dissertation Award are selected in four categories. This year's recipients each received Ph.D.s and are working in their fields. They are:
Arts and humanities: Elizabeth Weixel, English. Adviser: John Watkins.
Biological and medical sciences: Steve Davidson, neuroscience. Adviser: Glen Giesler, Jr.
Physical sciences and engineering: Zhongming Liu, biomedical engineering. Adviser: Bin He.
Social and behavioral sciences and education: Michael Vuolo, sociology. Adviser: Christopher Uggen.
Each year, directors of graduate studies select from a pool of more than 1,000 eligible students in a competition for the Best Dissertation Award, administered through the Graduate School. The selection committee also forwards nominations to represent the University of Minnesota in a national competition sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools.
Distinguished Master's Thesis Award
The winner of the 2009 Distinguished Master's Thesis, named last fall, is continuing in a Ph.D. program:
Juan Andrés Bazerque, electrical engineering. Adviser: Georgios Giannakis.
