Minnesota-Norway Fulbright Recipients

Kristin Elizabeth Garland, ’11, M.A. in Kinesiology, is the 2011-12 winner of the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.   Working directly with the Olympiatoppen, an organization responsible for training elite Norwegian athletes, she will assess the differences between college-based (sports-studies programs) and club-based (performance focused) training programs on the performance and life of athletes.  Garland graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a B.A. in Communication Studies in 2006.

Alyssa Mae Anderson
, Ph.D. student in Entomology, is the 2010-11 winner of the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.  Dr. Torbjorn Ekrem has invited her to join his lab to learn the techniques used for DNA Barcoding of Chironomidae.  Anderson graduated magna cum laude from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in Biology in 2006.

Heather Michelle Taterka,
M.S. in Food Science, is the recipient of the 2009-10 University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Grant Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.  She will study atmospheric freeze drying systems in Professor Trygve Eikevik’s lab.  Taterka received a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2007.

Matthew Lee Grandbois
, a Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.  He will enroll in the Master of Science program in Globalization.  Grandbois received a B.A. in Chemistry and Music Performance from Augustana College in 2004.

Todd Riley Olin, J.D., is the 2007-08 winner of the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. His research is a comparative study of energy policy between the United States and Norway. Olin received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (UM) in 2002 and a J.D. from the UM in 2007.

Adam Conrad Johnson, a Ph.D. student in Neuroscience,
is the 2006-07 winner of the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.  He will join a team of researchers at the Centre for the Biology of Memory at NTNU, where he will examine how animal behaviors and cellular behaviors are modified under pharmacological manipulation.  Johnson graduated magna cum laude from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a B.S. in Physics in 2002.

Robert G. Strand, MBA,
is the 2005-06 winner of the University of Minnesota Graduate School’s Fulbright Scholarship Exchange Program with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.  He will conduct a thorough investigation of how Norwegian business account for social responsibility and environmental stewardship, how they report these matters to their constituencies, and how some of the practices might be transferred to the United States. Mr. Strand received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1999 and a MBA from the University of Minnesota this spring.
