DISTINGUISHED MASTER’S THESIS AWARD
Nomination Deadline: Wednesday, October 10, 2012
INTRODUCTION
The Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award is given in recognition of distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level. The University of Minnesota recipient will be nominated to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools’ (MAGS) annual Distinguished Master’s Thesis competition.
ELIGIBILITY: Since the intent of the competition is to recognize scholarship by students who are pursuing their first graduate research degree, individuals who received a PhD (or comparable research degree) in any discipline prior to the writing of the master's thesis are not eligible. On the other hand, recipients of a first professional degree awarded prior to the writing of the thesis can be nominated. Nominations will be accepted in any discipline; however, original works accepted by the institution "in lieu of thesis" (such as musical compositions, works of art, computer software, etc.) are ineligible. Eligible nominees must have been awarded the Master's degree between the dates October 1, 2011 - September 30, 2012.
NOMINATION: Each graduate program may submit one nomination of a Plan A master's thesis. A PDF nomination package should be submitted to the Graduate Fellowship Office, gsfellow@umn.edu, by 12 noon on Wednesday, October 10. No hard-copy is required. An email response will be sent acknowledging receipt of nomination.
The PDF nomination file should include documents #1-3, in the following order:
1) A one-page nomination letter, signed by the the DGS and by the Associate Dean of the college;
2) a 300-word abstract describing the research and its significance, including the thesis title and name of the author but not the name of the nominating institution; and
3) a letter of support from the adviser.
4) An electonic copy of the thesis should also be provided, separate from the PDF nomination file.
SELECTION: The winner of the award will receive a $500 honorarium and will be nominated to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools’ (MAGS) annual Distinguished Master’s Thesis competition. The national MAGS winner will receive a $750 honorarium and will be invited to the MAGS annual meeting in spring 2013.
NOTIFICATION: Directors of Graduate Studies and Associate Deans will be notified of the nomination selection outcome.
