ALEXANDER ANDERSON AND LYDIA ANDERSON FELLOWSHIP
CAROLYN CROSBY FELLOWSHIP

2009-10 Instructions to Applicants

Deadline:  12 noon, December 1, 2008

 

Eligibility:

Students must be registered for credit in the University of Minnesota Graduate School at the time of application.  Applicants must designate either the Anderson or Crosby competition.   (Students are ineligible for a second award.)

 

Alexander Anderson and Lydia Anderson Fellowship:

Summer fellowship stipend of up to $3,000, and/or research grant of up to $3,000 for students in the plant or animal sciences – e.g., animal science, ecology, forestry, and plant pathology – with preference given to students involved in basic research.   Preference for students who will have completed either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota by no later than the end of the 2009 spring semester.   Up to three awards.

Carolyn Crosby Fellowship:

Summer fellowship stipend of up to $3,000, and/or research grant of up to $3,000 for students engaged in field-based plant biology investigation.  May be used for independent field research or for research or study at a field facility such as the Lake Itasca Forestry and Biological Station.  Up to three awards. 

 

Application Procedure:

Submit four sets (collated and stapled) of the following materials, in the following order:

1)  Application, signed and dated.

      • Application available online at http://www.grad.umn.edu/fellowships/applications.
      • Note in particular that the budget section should relate clearly to the project statement, and all items should be carefully detailed and justified under the “Budget Justification” section.

2)  Project statement, including research project title. 

      • Up to three pages, double-spaced, 12-point type, with margins not less than one inch, and project title at top of page.
      • Your project statement should describe the work already completed, the current status of the project, and whether or not it is to form the basis of your dissertation. 
      • If requesting a summer stipend, document that no other summer support is available.
      • If you choose to include key references, they must fit within the three-page limit.

3a)  A current University of Minnesota graduate transcript.

3b)  An explanation of any “Incomplete” grades must be submitted with this application (if applicable).

In Addition

4) Two letters of recommendation.

  • One of the letters must be from the major advisor.
  • Each letter should be no more than one-page, on letterhead, with the recommendation cover sheet attached.
  • Letters should be sent directly to the Graduate Fellowship Office for duplication (314 Johnston Hall).  Or, applicants may bring sealed envelopes directly to the Fellowship Office.
  • No more than two recommendations will be forwarded to the committee.

Please Note

Since the selection committee reviews only applications that are complete in every detail, students should verify with the Graduate School Fellowship Office that all required supporting materials (two letters) have been received.

 

 

Selection Criteria:

The review and selection will be conducted by University of Minnesota faculty, which will select the awardees based on the following criteria:

  • the strength of the overall academic record,
  • the cohesiveness of the study or research plan and the clarity with which it is conveyed to the non-specialist,
  • the strength of the letters of recommendation,
  • the soundness of the budget request, and
  • the timeliness of progress toward the degree.

 

Notification:

Applicants will be notified, in writing, by the end of March.
