Domestic & International Thesis Research Grant Questions

Can I apply for both the International Thesis Research Grant and the Domestic Thesis Research Grant at the same time?

No, you may apply for only one of them.

 

Can I receive both the Domestic Thesis Research Grant and the International Thesis Research Grant over the course of my Graduate School career?

No, students are eligible to receive only one of these awards during the entire course of their Graduate School career.

 

If the deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, when is the application due?

The application would be due at 12 noon, on the Monday after the deadline.

 

Which category should I apply for, 1, 2 or 3?

Category 1: If you are a doctoral student who will have passed your oral preliminary examination by the end of the semester of application.

Category 2: If you are a doctoral student who will not have passed your oral preliminary examination by the end of the semester of application.

Category 3: If you are pursuing a Plan A Master's degree.

 

When will the Electronic Cover Page for my application be available online?

The Electronic Cover Page will be available online one month prior to the application deadline, at the following link: https://www.grad.umn.edu/gradforms/trg/application.asp

You will need to submit the form electronically, and also include a printout as the cover sheet for each copy of your application.

 

How many copies of the application do I need to provide?

You should provide the original (collated and stapled) application, and three copies of the original (also collated and stapled), for a total of four sets.

 

I haven't received my IRB/IACUC approval yet. What should I do?

Please submit a copy of your approval as soon as it is received. If you are awarded a Thesis Research Grant, funding will be dependent upon receipt of IRB/IACUC documentation.

 

My study involves human or animal subjects, but IRB/IACUC told me that I don't need approval for my research. What should I do?

Please submit the email or letter from IRB or IACUC stating that approval is not required for your project.

 

How should I calculate my budget expenses? Is there a per-diem amount I should use?

It is up to you to determine what your travel expenses will be. Please include an explanation of how you calculated your costs in the "Budget Justification" section of the Budget Proposal.

 

Changes have been made to my approved degree program, but they are not yet on file in the Graduate School. Do I need to obtain an officially updated form?

No, you may add the changes to your current copy. (This document is only required for students applying under Category 3.)

 

May I bring my letters of recommendation directly to the Fellowship Office when I submit my application?

Yes, as long as the letters of recommendation are in sealed envelopes, you may deliver them to our office yourself. We are located in 314 Johnston Hall, 101 Pleasant Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455. Campus Map - Johnston Hall

 

International Thesis Research Grant Questions

I am a native speaker of the language that will be used to conduct research. Do I need to obtain a language evaluation?

Instead of obtaining a language evaluation, please include a signed statement indicating the language which will be used to conduct research, and stating that you are a native speaker of that language. You may sign this statement yourself.

 

Why do I need to obtain a letter of affiliation?

The purpose of obtaining a letter of affiliation is to demonstrate that, if granted funding, you will be able to successfully carry out the proposed research. The letter may be in the form of email contact.

 

I will be conducting research in library archives. Do I still need to obtain a letter of affiliation?

You will want to provide proof to the selection committee that you will be able to successfully conduct your planned research. If you will be using library archives, you could obtain an email from a librarian verifying that you will have access to the required materials.

 

I will be conducting surveys. Do I still need to obtain a letter of affiliation?

You will want to provide proof to the selection committee that you will be able to successfully conduct your planned research. If you are conducting surveys, please provide whatever type of documention you can that will demonstrate to the selection committee your ability to connect with the appropriate resources (such as business, community or scholarly contacts who will be able to assist you).
