Graduate Faculty Roster Introduction

Faculty appointments may be accessed by individual faculty name or by program name. If an appointment has a termination date, it appears in the far right-hand column. Degree-granting, minor-only and postbaccalaureate certificate programs are represented, as are other fields that offer courses for graduate credit but not Graduate School programs, e.g., Chicano Studies.

Faculty on the Twin Cities and Duluth Campuses

The field of appointment is indicated in the "Program" column. Fields are on the Twin Cities campus unless the program name is followed by "(Duluth)" which indicates the Duluth campus. Toxicology and Water Resources Science are University-wide graduate programs spanning both campuses.

Some programs based on one campus draw on faculty from both campuses. The campus where the faculty member is geographically located appears in the "Home Campus" column. If a faculty member is geographically located on the Duluth campus but participates in a Twin Cities-based program, "Duluth" appears in the "Home Campus" column and the Twin Cities program name appears in the "Program" column. Conversely, if a faculty member is geographically located on the Twin Cities campus but participates in a Duluth-based program, "Twin Cities" appears in the "Home Campus" column and "(Duluth)" is appended to the program name in the "Program" column.

Criteria for Membership

General descriptions of graduate faculty membership categories and of basic qualifications for appointment are contained in the Graduate School constitution, Article III. The six Policy and Review Councils have established specific criteria that govern appointment in the fields of study within the purview of each Council. In accordance with provisions of Article III of the constitution, each graduate program, using its Policy and Review Council's appointment criteria, is responsible for making its own appointments to the graduate faculty and for informing the Graduate School of all appointments made. The form for submitting appointments is the GS74 form ("Notification of Graduate School Appointment")

Categories of Membership and Associated Responsibilities

Senior Member (SM): Authorization to advise students at all levels, including the doctorate; to serve as a thesis reviewer and as an examiner on student examining committees, including service as chair of doctoral committees; to teach courses for graduate credit; and to participate in governance. In fields that also offer a professional doctorate, some Senior Member appointments may be restricted to the supervision of students seeking the professional degree.

Affiliate Senior Member (ASM): Authorization to assume the same responsibilities as Senior Member, but not to participate in governance. In fields that also offer a professional doctorate, some Affiliate Senior Member appointments may be restricted to the supervision of students seeking the professional degree.

Member/Advising (M2): Authorization to advise students at the master's level; to serve as a thesis reviewer at the master's level and as an examiner on student examining committees at the master's and postbaccalaureate certificate levels; to teach courses for graduate credit; and to participate in governance. At the discretion of the appointing program, may also include authorization to co-advise doctoral students with a Senior Member or Affiliate Senior Member of the graduate faculty, and to serve as a thesis reviewer and examining committee member for doctoral students, but not as chair.

Affiliate Member/Advising (AM2): Authorization to assume the same responsibilities as Member/Advising, but not to participate in governance.

Member (M): Authorization to serve as a thesis reviewer at the master's level and as an examiner on student examining committees at the master's and postbaccalaureate certificate levels; to teach courses for graduate credit; and to participate in governance. At the discretion of the appointing program, may also include authorization to serve as a thesis reviewer and examining committee member for doctoral students, but not as chair. This appointment status is appropriate in degree-granting (master's and doctoral), minor-only and post-baccalaureate certificate programs.

Affiliate Member (AM): Authorization to assume the same responsibilities as Member, but not to participate in governance.

Examining Status (E): Authorization to serve as a thesis reviewer and as an examiner on student examining committees at all levels, but not as chair, and to teach courses for graduate credit. E status does not include membership on the graduate faculty and does not confer governance privileges. This status is only available in units that offer graduate courses but not Graduate School programs.

Graduate Faculty Membership for Professors Emeriti: Retired professors may continue their graduate faculty memberships under certain circumstances and in accordance with special criteria. Such appointments are intended only for professors emeriti who wish to accept new advising and examining committee assignments beyond the date of their retirement. (Graduate faculty members whose status has been terminated due to retirement may complete outstanding examining committee and advising assignments if they wish to do so, but they may not accept new assignments without reappointment to the graduate faculty.)
