2009 Searle Scholars Program

Internal Deadline: Monday, August 11, 2008

The University of Minnesota has been invited to submit two applications for the 2009 Searles Scholars Program competition. This competition normally offers 15 grants nationwide to new tenure-track appointees, with $300,000 awarded for a three-year period in installments of $100,000 per year. Those who will be considered are individuals who are pursuing independent research careers in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Candidates should have begun or will begin their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2007. This appointment must be a tenure-track position. INSTRUCTIONS TO REQUEST NOMINATION

To apply for selection as a nominee, please provide:

  1. Curriculum vitae (limit to 3 pages). Please include your phone number and e-mail address along with the year you received your Ph.D. and the date of your first tenure-track appointment.
  2. List of other sources of support, awarded or applied for (include title, period, direct costs, sponsor, relationship to current proposal).
  3. Publication list. For any papers submitted, but not yet published, please include date of submission in your listing. If nominated, you will be asked to provide up to five digital copies of papers which you consider provide evidence of your scientific abilities. Please asterisk those papers that you would include in your final Searle application.
  4. Research program/proposal (3 pages) Provide an overview of the specific areas of research you would like to carry out in your laboratory in the next few years and then describe what part of the research would be supported with these funds. Include the project's aims and objectives, methods to be used, and why the work is particularly novel and important. Please include one paragraph stating how the receipt of this award would allow you to accomplish your research goals. Figures and references need not be included in the 3-page limit, but should be kept to a minimum.
  5. Letter of nomination from your department head/chair or director.
  6. Reference letters. Please solicit three letters of reference. Include one each from your doctoral and postdoctoral mentors, or from similarly placed individuals who are acquainted with your research and achievement and potential. It is preferred that the letters come from outside of the University of Minnesota. Letters may be addressed to the Searle Scholars Program Selection Committee, University of Minnesota- Graduate School/Faculty Grants Office, 420 Johnston Hall, 101 Pleasant Street, Minneapolis, MN 55455. If your reviewers have any questions refer them to the Searle website External Link.Also, please include the names, titles and addresses of the three people from whom you will solicit letters of reference for this internal selection with your materials. If you are selected as a University of Minnesota candidate, each of your referees must provide a final letter for submission to the sponsoring agency by their deadline of September 26, 2008.

All materials may be sent electronically to the Faculty Grants Office at facgrant@umn.edu by Monday, August 11, 2008. An appointed selection committee will review all applications and select the nominees for the national competitions before the end of August. Final applications for those nominated must be received by the Searle Scholars Program by Friday, September 26, 2008.
