Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering 2009

Internal deadline: Monday, February 23, 2009

We are pleased to announce the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowships for faculty engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering.   Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering.  The intent of the Fellowship program is to provide support for unusually creative researchers early in their careers; faculty members who are well established and well funded are less likely to receive the award.

Each Fellowship provides $175,000 per year for five years. Nominees must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty careers, that is, whose appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2006, and no later than May 31, 2009. Detailed guidelines can be found on the Packard Foundation External Link web site.

The University of Minnesota may submit up to two nominations. Potential candidates should complete and submit the following:

  1. Curriculum Vitae: 3 page limit, including name, department, work address, education (include Baccalaureate), positions held (beginning with present), other professional experience, honors and awards, and publications (please list only complete articles published or in press; abstracts and presentations should not be included).
  2. Statement of current external support.
  3. Statement by the nominee (Not to exceed two pages or 1400 words): Describe why the research is important and outline general goals for the next five years. Also indicate, in general, how funds will be used. This need not be a detailed budget.
  4. Four Reference Letters:  One from nominee's department head and three from external referees.  At least one recommendation must be from a person who has had no supervisory or collaborative contact with the nominee. Please submit all letters directly to the Faculty Grants Office via e-mail facgrant@umn.edu. The letters may be addressed to Myrna Smith, Director of Faculty Research and Graduate Fellowships, Office of the Dean of the Graduate School. Final nominees must resubmit reference letters directly to the Packard Foundation by their deadline of April 20, 2009.
Please submit all preliminary proposal materials electronically to facgrant@umn.edu no later than Monday, February 23, 2009. The names of the U of MN nominee(s) chosen in the internal competition will be forwarded to the Foundation by March 16, 2009. Final application materials are due to the Packard Foundation by April 20, 2009.

Please direct any questions about this competition to facgrant@umn.edu Email Link, or 612-625-2356 or 612-625-7585.
