2008 The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Awards Program

Internal Deadline: Thursday, April 3, 2008

The Dreyfus New Faculty Awards program was established in 1979 to provide funding for new faculty members at the start of their research and teaching activities. Unrestricted research grants of $50,000 over five years are approved generally before the new faculty member formally begins their first tenure-track appointment. Only faculty members who are due to start their first full-time tenure-track appointments in the calendar year of nomination (2008) and are in the chemical sciences (materials chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering) are eligible for awards.

The University of Minnesota may submit ONE nomination annually. To be considered for the 2008 nomination, please submit:

  1. Nomination letter from department head or chair (in two pages, the letter should state reasons for nominee's selection, and the role the nominee is expected to play in the department's research and curricular activities);
  2. CV of nominee, not to exceed 4 pages that includes relevant publications and any special recognitions;
  3. Nominee's description of independent research plans and a statement on teaching (3 pages plus references), which should be directed to a general chemical audience, avoiding the use of highly specialized terminology or undefined acronyms;
  4. Budget presentation describing how award funds will be used (one page);
  5. Three letters from individuals familiar with the nominee's capabilities and accomplishments. The letters should be adressed to Dreyfus New Faculty Award Selection Committee and submitted directly to the Graduate School at facgrant@umn.edu Email Link or via fax to 612-626-7431. Please note that the nominee selected must have their references send supporting letters directly to the Dreyfus Foundation by their deadline of May 8, 2008.

To facilitate readability, a 12-point font size and margins of at least three-quarters of an inch are recommended.

Submission materials should be sent via e-mail attachments to facgrant@umn.edu by Thursday, April 3, 2008.

The internal selection process will be completed by mid-April. Please visit the program web site at http://www.dreyfus.org/awards/new_faculty_awards_program.shtmlExternal Link, or contact our Research Support Services office at facgrant@umn.edu Email Link or 612-625-2356 if you have questions about this program.
