Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Career Awards at the Scientific Interface Program

Internal Deadline for preproposals: Monday, March 10, 2008

We are pleased to announce that the University of Minnesota may submit up to four applications for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Career Awards at the Scientific Interface Program.

This award program from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund was created in 2001 to provide funding for postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. This award provides up to $500,000 in support over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of a faculty appointment.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in one of the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry (physical, theoretical or computational), computer science, statistics, or engineering.
  • Candidates must have completed at least 12 months, but not more than 48 months of postdoctoral training at the time of application.
  • Candidates must not hold nor have accepted, either in writing or verbally, a faculty appointment as a tenure-track professor at the time of application.
  • Candidates must be committed to a full-time career in research as an independent investigator at a North American degree-granting institution.
  • Citizens of the U.S. and Canada are eligible.
  • Non-citizen Permanent residents of the U.S. and Canada are eligible with certification by the nominating institute.
  • One of the candidates may be a temporary resident of the U.S. (see BWF guidelines for restrictions)

The research proposal must address questions in any area of biomedical science. Research methods may include any combination of experiment, computation, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, imaging or computer simulation.

To be considered for this award, please submit:

  1. CV of nominee, not to exceed 3 pages.

  2. Nominee's description of research. Begin with a paragraph summary abstract and then describe briefly past work, scope and significance of the proposed postdoctoral research, work planned for the faculty years, and career objectives (3 pages).

  3. List three publications or manuscripts accepted for publication that demonstrate relevant research accomplishments.

  4. (Optional) List up to two collaborators with CVs (1 page each). Because this award is designed to fund interdisciplinary research, establishing collaborations can add significantly to the recipient's productivity.

  5. Letter from faculty sponsor under whom the awardee will work during the postdoctoral portion of the award describing the candidate's qualifications and potential for contributing to biomedical science, highlighting skills or expertise in a scientific discipline other than biology. The letter may be addressed to Myrna Smith, Director of Faculty Research and Graduate Fellowships, Office of the Dean of the Graduate School.

Materials must be be submitted electronically to facgrant@umn.edu by 4:30 p.m., Monday, March 10th. Faculty sponsor letters can be sent by e-mail to facgrant@umn.edu or post to:
