NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program Announcement

Internal Deadline for preproposals: Thursday, May 1, 2008

The University of Minnesota may submit one application for the NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program. This program supports fellowships and associated training that enable graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire additional skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st Century.

The objectives of the GK-12 program are: 1) to support highly qualified graduate students in NSF- supported STEM disciplines through fellowships to provide them with an opportunity to acquire additional skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st century; 2) to improve STEM instruction in K-12 schools; and 3) to provide institutions of higher education with an opportunity to make a permanent change in their graduate programs by incorporating GK-12 like activities in the training of their STEM graduate students.

The GK-12 program offers awards for new projects for up to $600,000 per year for five years. Track 1, 2 or continuing funding are no longer offered.

Evaluation Criteria:

Preproposals will be evaluated using the criteria stated in section VI (Proposal Review Information).

Preproposal Instructions:

Preproposals should include the following:

  1. Cover page that includes the PI name, Department, e-mail, Project Title
  2. A list of Co-PIs, STEM faculty advisors and departments involved; Numbers of 1)STEM Graduate fellows per year 2)K-12 classes anticipated to be served per year, 3) Schools and school district partners; Target audience (elementary, middle and high school grades); Setting (urban, suburban, rural).
  3. Abbreviated Vita and Publications for PI. Limit three pages. List education, appointments, relevant publications.
  4. Description of the proposed project that includes the objectives, STEM research/interdisciplinary theme(s), and innovative aspects of the project (limit five pages). Indicate how fellow-teacher partnerships will be initiated and enhanced during the lifetime of the project, and how the program will benefit the fellows, teachers, K-12 students, STEM faculty, and K-12 and higher education institutions. Also include the intellectual merit and broader impacts of the project proposed.
  5. Current and Pending support for PI and Co-PIs .
  6. A summary budget for each year of support requested.
  7. Letter(s) of collaboration/support from superintendent(s) of participating K-12 school, if available.

The U of Minnesota applicant will be required to submit a letter of intent to NSF by May 16, 2008, and submit a full proposal by July 3, 2008.
