2009 NEH Summer Stipends

Internal Deadline: Monday, June 30, 2008

The National Endowment for the Humanities' Summer Stipends program provides support for individuals to pursue two consecutive months of full-time research and writing, supported by a stipend of $6,000. In addition, a supplement of $6,000 will be provided by the Graduate School to each nominee successful in obtaining the NEH Summer Stipend for 2009. Two nominees from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus are allowed.*

Eligibility: An applicant should be a U.S. citizen, or a foreign national who has been residing in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline. Persons who have held a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent during the last three academic years are not eligible. A "major fellowship or research grant" is a postdoctoral research award that provides a stipend of at least $10,000. Sabbaticals or grants from an individual's own institution are not considered major fellowships, nor are stipends and grants from other sources supporting study and research during the summer. Summer Stipend recipients must wait five years before they are eligible to apply again to the program. Therefore, persons who have held NEH Summer Stipends in 2004 or later are not eligible to apply for the 2009 awards.

Faculty members teaching full-time at the U of MN must be nominated to apply for a Summer Stipend.

Nomination: If you wish to be considered for nomination, please compile the following:

  1. a resume, not to exceed two pages;
  2. a detailed description of the proposed study, not to exceed three pages; i.e., a draft of your NEH proposal; and
  3. a bibliography for the project, not to exceed one page.

Preproposal materials must be submitted to Research Support Services at facgrant@umn.edu no later than Monday, June 30, 2008. Selection of the two nominees will be made by late July by a committee of faculty members. If nominated, your final online proposal to NEH must be completed by Wednesday, October 1, 2008. Full program information is also available from NEH at (http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html External Link).

Please contact Research Support Services at facgrant@umn.edu or by phone at 612.625.2356 or 612.625.7585 with questions.

*Please note: Each University of Minnesota campus is eligible to submit two nominations for the NEH Summer Stipend and hold their own internal competitions. Nominated candidates who receive the NEH Stipend will also receive the $6,000 U of MN/Graduate School supplement.
