Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation's Young Investigators Program

Internal Deadline for preproposals: Wednesday, August 27, 2008

We are pleased to announce that the University of Minnesota may submit two applications for the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation's Young Investigators Program.

The Beckman Foundation makes grants to non-profit research institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The Beckman Young Investigators (BYI) Program is intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Grants are normally in the range of $300,000 and funded over three years.

Eligibility:

  • Open to persons with tenure-track appointments that conduct fundamental research in the chemical and life sciences.
  • Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.  Persons who have applied for permanent residency but have not received their government documentation by the time of application are not eligible.
  • Applicant should not have completed more than three full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment.
  • No individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than three times.

Internal Guidelines: The University may nominate up to two candidates.  Nomination materials should include:

  1. A proposal (4 pages maximum). The description should make clear the rationale for the proposed work, its potential importance, the approach to be taken, progress to date and the potential significant outcomes.

  2. Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)

  3. Please solicit three letters of reference. At least one of these three should be someone who was not your Ph.D. or postdoctoral research mentor, but who can provide a substantive evaluation of your proposal. Also, at least one of the letters of recommendation will have to come from an expert in the field of the proposal with whom the applicant has no association (nor a mentor), and who is at an institution where the applicant has never been (including, especially, the applicant's current position.) Letters may be addressed to the Beckman Foundation Young Investigator's Program Selection Committee, University of Minnesota- Graduate School/Faculty Grants Office, 420 Johnston Hall, 101 Pleasant Street, Minneapolis, MN 55455. All letters must be sent directly to the Graduate School via post (address above), e-mail (facgrant@umn.edu) or facsimile (612-626-7431). If you are selected as a University of Minnesota candidate, each of your referees must provide a final letter for submission to the sponsoring agency by their deadline of October 1, 2008.

All materials must be received by Wednesday, August 27, 2008, and may be submitted electronically to facgrant@umn.edu.
