Current request for proposals

PIs will be notified of Spring 2008 Grant-in-Aid decisions at the end of April.

Deadline: Monday, February 4, 2008

We are pleased to announce the Spring round of the FY2009 Grant-in-Aid Program administered by the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School. This program represents one important means by which this office is able to promote the scholarly and artistic activities of the faculty and their graduate students and to foster academic excellence within the University. Guidelines have been established to ensure that the available funds are distributed fairly, are effective in sustaining the vitality and quality of research at the University, and as seed money, help to stimulate the development of funding from external sources.

Faculty members whose needs fall into one of the fundable categories and do not currently hold a Grant-in-Aid, are encouraged to submit applications. Applications will be reviewed by either the Biomedical Research Advisory Committee or the General Research Advisory Committee according to the area of the research. Applicants are encouraged to consult the evaluation criteria used by the review committees prior to writing their proposal.

In view of the limited funds available for this purpose and an anticipated increase in faculty needs, it is in your best interest to submit your application by the prescribed deadline. Applications received after Monday, February 4, 2008, will not be considered for funding.

While there is no rigid maximum amount of a grant, we aim to use our limited funds to support as many worthy projects as possible. In FY2008, 127 grants were awarded with an average award of $23,048. Requests for amounts considerably larger than the average are rarely granted, at least not in full. In such cases if a grant is awarded, it will likely be contingent on the applicant raising matching funds.

The grant period for proposals awarded in the Spring begins July 1, 2008, and ends January 15, 2010. Guidelines prohibit a faculty member from holding more than one Grant-in-Aid during a grant period (with the exception of shared equipment awards) whether or not funding has been fully expended. Therefore, the next grant period for which January 1, 2008, awardees could seek additional Grant-in-Aid funding is that beginning January 1, 2010 (submission deadline in September 2009).

All proposals must be submitted on a Grant-in-Aid application form (rev. 12/07). Proposals from coordinate campuses may be submitted to the UMD Graduate School Office (218-726-7523) and UMC Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Office (218-281-8341) before 12:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline, to be submitted by overnight mail. Please check with the UMM--Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Office (320-589-6015) or email petersdk@mrs.umn.edu Email Link) for the internal deadline of that campus.

For questions, please call Research Support Services at 612-625-2356 or email facgrant@umn.edu Email Link.
