Special Instructions For Interim Support Requests (Category #7)

Proposals that fit this category may only be submitted when documentation has been received that renewal of a previously funded external grant has been unsuccessful. Thus, proposals in this category are accepted at any time during the year. Highest priority in this category will be given to those who have lost all research support rather than simply a portion of support.  Upon completion of a funded Category 7 grant, a one-page report will be required describing outcomes of research and, specifically, subsequent funding by the external agency.  Applications should be made on the standard Grant-in-Aid forms and should follow these guidelines:

  1. Add a cover letter explaining the circumstances of the lapse in funding and also describe what other sources of matching funds are available.
  2. The proposal should focus on a subsection of the larger project, for which funding has temporarily lapsed. Choose the most critical, exciting, timely portion of the overall project and discuss the scientific background and plan of work as requested in the guidelines for all applications. The committee will evaluate the quality of the project on the basis of your focused application and, in general, independent of the outside reviews.
  3. Copies of any outside reviews, e.g., "pink sheets" for NIH proposals, must be provided as well as any rebuttal of specific criticisms raised. Although the committee will reach an independent judgment of quality, it will also consider the likelihood of subsequent funding, for example of a revised proposal, by the external agency.
  4. As sufficient funds are not available to fully cover the loss of external funding, budgets should be planned accordingly.  Personnel are typically the most critical component needing support, so you should begin with the individual(s) most difficult to replace. Other costs are allowable in principle, but awards rarely exceed $25,000 and the committee may recommend only partial funding.  Each budget item should be specifically justified in relation to the focused proposal.
  5. Any matching funds to be provided (e.g. department, college, MN Medical Foundation) should be clearly described, so that reviewers can judge the level of departmental and/or collegiate support for the research.  The Past, Present and Potential Funding statement should include information on what other sources will be contributing and the respective amounts.
  6. This category applies only to projects that have previously been supported by an external agency--not to new, previously unsupported projects. This category is inappropriate for support to complete a project that has not been submitted to an external agency for renewal. This category is also inappropriate for funding to augment an external award--even if the external award amount was inadequate to complete the project.
  7. Proposals for consecutive Category 7 grants will not be considered, i.e. if funding is not renewed following the initial Category 7 grant, or if the application for renewal was delayed.
