Electronic Dissertation Submission
Please read all of this information carefully. Students submitting electronically are expected to review the Formatting Guidelines for the Doctoral Dissertation as well, for information about formatting and deadlines.
Students may now submit their dissertations and abstracts to The Graduate School via the web. To do this, the full text of the dissertation must be in Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, or RTF format, and must be one file. Students may also include electronic attachment files such as images, sounds, and video. The website for further information, and for submitting the dissertation electronically is http://dissertations.umi.com/umn/
Students submitting their dissertations electronically must follow all formatting guidelines in this document. Electronic submission does not exempt students from submitting a paper copy to GSSP. Students are required to supply The Graduate School with a paper copy of their dissertation, which follows all guidelines in the Formatting Guidelines for the Doctoral Dissertation. The paper copy will go to the library for circulation. Students are also required to submit the following graduation materials:
- Application for Degree
- Final Oral Examination form
- One title page with the correct month and year of degree clearance
- One check, made out to the University of Minnesota, for $75 (required, for archiving) or $140 (if also registering copyright with Library of Congress)
Students do not have to submit the paper Microfilm Agreement form, nor the separate paper abstract; this information is collected electronically.
Color photographs and images are allowed. Proquest/ UMI distributes electronic PDFs of dissertations by request; color images are preserved in these versions of the dissertation. However, students should be aware that requests for paper copies of the dissertation will be reproduced in black and white only; thus the reproduced black and white images of color originals may not be clearly visible or may not convey information adequately.
For tables, charts, and graphs: identification of lines and figures on graphs and charts may use line symbols or variation in color. Again, students should be mindful that printed, black and white reproductions will not show the color distinction between lines. Captions may be single-spaced.
