The University of Minnesota is a top public research university.

Many Graduate School programs at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities consistently receive national recognition for their excellence. Other leading programs are in fields that do not rank their disciplines. The most prestigious rankings are those published by the Center for Measuring University Performance and the National Research Council (NRC). Also of note are the rankings of U.S. News and World Report and the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jio Tong University.

Currrently, the University of Minnesota is in the midst of a 'Strategic Positioning Initiative' with the goal of becoming one of the

The University of Minnesota was ranked in the Top 13 of all public and private research institutions in the United States by The Center for Measuring University Performance at Arizona State University in 2006.

The Center is a research enterprise focused on the competitive national context for major research universities. Its annual reports assess a broad range of measures including research and development expenditures, private support, faculty quality, the amount of advanced training an institution carries out, and the quality of entering undergraduate students.
