University of Minnesota Assists in First Artificial Heart Transplant in Asia
Following three months of training at the University of Minnesota, cardiologists at Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Bangalore, India, performed the first successful artificial heart transplant in Asia. Under the guidance of experts from the University, the transplant was performed on a 54-year old man by T. R. Rajesh and R. Bhagirath. The hospital waived the cost of the surgery. According to Dr. Devi Shetty, chief cardiologist, the hospital will continue to bear the cost of surgery for those who can pay for the Left Ventricular Assist Device.
