THE FESLER-LAMPERT CHAIR AND PROFESSORSHIP IN PUBLIC HUMANITIES
Through the generosity and vision of David and B. J. Fesler, the Fesler-Lampert Chair in Humanities was established in 1999 to honor Bert Fesler and Jacob Lampert; the Fesler-Lampert Professorship in Humanities was added shortly after. Both of these positions have been occupied by distinguished scholars and teachers at the University of Minnesota whose scholarship or creative activity made a significant contribution to understanding in the arts, humanities or related social sciences. Selection was made by the Institute for the Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts. In recognition of the chairholder’s and professor’s accomplishments, this prestigious award carried with it a generous grant to support research or creative work.
In 2007, the Fesler-Lampert Chair and Professorship were re-defined to strengthen the connections between humanities scholars and public audiences by refocusing the endowment on the support of Public Humanities scholars. Nominations and applications for the newly-defined Chair and Professorship are reviewed by a faculty committee of distinguished humanists. The occupants of these positions will continue to support research in the humanities, although preference now goes to public scholars whose interdisciplinary work reaches beyond the academy by contributing to the public good, engaging community partners in jointly planned projects, contributing to critical debates, reaching wider audiences for humanities scholarship, or otherwise strengthening the relationship between the university and multiple publics. The first recipients’ appointments began July 2007.
The Fesler-Lampert Chair in Public Humanities is a one-year appointment that carries a research grant of $40,000 for 2007-08. The Fesler-Lampert Professorship in Public Humanities is a one-year appointment that carries a research grant of $20,000 for 2007-2008.
