Fellowships for Research Abroad

      The Fellowship Office processes applications and, when appropriate, conducts interviews for several competitions for graduate study abroad. All awards listed below, except the Thesis Research Grants, require U.S. citizenship. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record, a carefully formulated study proposal, flexibility to adjust to new cultures and educational systems, and a wide range of interests. Each award has its own additional requirements. Applications are available from the Fellowship Office.

 

 

Fulbright Program

Offers a variety of grants for one year of study or research abroad to over 140 countries. Applicants must have proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country. Campus information and applications are available in May each year for the upcoming academic year.

Special Fulbright Opportunity in Norway

The University of Minnesota has a special exchange agreement with the Fulbright Scholarship Program to offer an award for study at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2010-11. Graduate students in any field are eligible.

 

Submit preliminary applications as soon after June 1 as possible, but not later than August 15.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Provides 10 months of study or research in Germany for advanced graduate students. Applicants must be 18 to 32. Campus information and applications are available in July each year for the upcoming academic year.

Luce Scholars Program

Provides one-year internships in Asia to persons who have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Persons from all fields except Asian Affairs may apply. Applicants must be under 30 when the internship begins. Campus information and applications are available in June.

International Thesis Research Grants, including the Myrna G. Smith International Graduate Fellowship

Grants of up to $5,000 are available to conduct research abroad for six weeks to six months.

 

Deadline: 12 noon, October 1 and March 1* (if deadline falls on a weekend, then 12 noon the following Monday.)

* For summer or fall research, apply by the March 1 deadline.
