Upcoming DGS Workshops

Faculty Member as Mentor: Best Practices in the Successful Mentoring of Graduate Students

Primary Audience: DGSs
Date: December 3, 2009
Time: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Campus Club, Rooms A,B&C (map)

Mentoring can be one of the most rewarding aspects of a faculty member’s career—and it is a critical element in a graduate student’s successful development. Yet, not all mentoring relationships yield the desired benefits. What are effective mentoring practices and characteristics of a successful mentoring relationship? What are the barriers to effective mentoring? What are some of the tools and resources available to mentors? This workshop is intended to help mentors of graduate students—as well as aspiring mentors—learn how they can best support a graduate student’s professional development goals and career plans. In an interactive session, participants will explore mentoring issues in several contexts (communication, climate, conflict and networking), and tools will be provided that reflect best mentoring practices. This workshop is intended for faculty who mentor graduate students. Sponsored by The Graduate School and the Student Conflict Resolution Center, University of Minnesota.
